IUB hosts 8th BELTA International Conference


IUB Live: Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) hosted the 8thBangladesh English Language Teachers Association (BELTA) A�International Conference titled a�?Expanding Horizons in English Language Educationa�?held fromA�12 January at its own campus in Basundhara, Dhaka.

The Chief Guest at the inaugural session was US Ambassador to Bangladesh Ms. Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat while the Special Guest was Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, IUB. Others who spoke were, the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of IUB Dr Mahbub Alam, BELTA PresidentHarunur Rashid Khan, Conference Chair Dr Arifa Rahman andHead, English Department, IUBTowhid Bin Muzaffar. Besides the Keynote Paper was presented by internationally reputed language educator Dr Christine Coombe.

There were 10 plenary and featured presentations made by a multi-dimensional group of international and national speakers. 81 concurrent papers, 10 workshops, and 5 colloquia and panel discussions took place during the 3-day Conference. The delegates and participants nearly 450 were from Bangladesh as well as from Nepal, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia.

About 150 English language teachers from primary, secondary, tertiary and madrassa levels from thirteen regional BELTA chapters also participated. The conference provided a forum and a networking opportunity for English language teaching professionals from around the country and beyond to share insights and research findings and to discuss topical issues, innovations and challenges.
